Diamond Hat

Diamond Hat

Today I’m sharing the second of the hats I knit over the summer.

For this hat I wanted to practice colourwork as I had the perfect hat pattern and wool combo for a future project.

The hat had to be a simple but an effective pattern so I found a free pattern for the Diamond Hat on Ravelry.

I had some DK merino in my stash but the colours didn’t really go together as I wanted a hat where the colourwork would ‘pop’. So I hit my LYS and bought a couple of balls to make a selection of fun colours. In the end I had 5 different colours of Drops Merino Extra Fine DK : light grey, heather, mustard, blue and off white.

This project was purely a process knit and as I had no-one in mind for this project I decided to use grey for the ribbing as that would suit most people. The ribbing was knit using a twisted rib stitch – a bit of a pain to do for an extended period but it produces a beautifully neat looking rib.

The hat took me just 3 days to knit and it feels so cosy. The colourwork provides a double layer of wool so I can see why it’s so popular as clothing in cold climates.

Look at those floats, I was so pleased with the tension and the hat fits me perfectly.

Knitting this hat taught me a few things and I can see that I’m really growing as a knitter.

Such a cute hat! Looks like there is enough yarn for another colorwork piece 😉

You’re probably right, I should weigh what I have left.

It’s so pretty, and the floats are impressively neat! I hope I can get my colourwork like that one day.
